Youth Park Redevelopment: A Bright Future for Kingaroy’s Youth

Kingaroy is building a brighter tomorrow for its youth.
South Burnett CTC’s $3.96 million Youth Park redevelopment, set to begin in July 2025, will transform the Somerset Street site into a dynamic community hub.

With federal backing and local resolve, this project is poised to empower young people and strengthen our region. Here’s why it’s a pivotal moment for South Burnett.

Why This Matters: A Critical Need

Our youth face daunting hurdles, with nearly 10,000 young Queenslanders experiencing homelessness on any given night, according to youth support agencies. The current Youth Park facilities are aging and stretched to the limit, unable to meet the growing demands of programs like Haven House Kingaroy and Malcolm’s Youth Hostel.

The redevelopment represents a bold step to ensure every young person has a chance to thrive, providing modern facilities that can support the expanding needs of South Burnett CTC’s youth services.

“This redevelopment is an investment in our staff and the South Burnett community.”

— Jason Erbacher, South Burnett CTC CEO

Project Details and Funding Partnership

The project’s funding reflects a united effort between federal and local commitment. A $1.984 million grant from the federal Growing Regions Program, announced by Maranoa MP David Littleproud, is matched by CTC’s $1.984 million contribution. This partnership fuels a new era for youth services and underscores CTC’s commitment to local impact.

By the Numbers: Youth Park Redevelopment

  • Total Project Cost: $3.96 million
  • Federal Grant: $1.984 million via Growing Regions Program
  • CTC Contribution: $1.984 million (matching federal funds)
  • Staff Supported: 270+ CTC employees
  • Construction Start: July 2025
  • Completion Target: June 30, 2026

The new community hub will include five interview rooms, an admin area, emergency relief storage, lunchroom, and amenities block. Construction will begin at the current undercover area beside the skate park, ensuring that existing services can continue without disruption.

“These funds will build a fit-for-purpose youth and family services centre.”

— David Littleproud, Member for Maranoa

Community Impact and Growth

The redeveloped Youth Park will support the growing demands of South Burnett CTC, which has increased its staff from 240 to over 270 since May 2024. The facility will support six new service contracts in youth homelessness and residential care, while programs like the Safer Communities initiative will benefit from dedicated workshop and activity spaces for youth aged 12–24.

The upgraded hub will be a safe, modern space for youth engagement, services, and support, reinforcing programs linked to Haven House and Malcolm’s Youth Hostel. This creates a comprehensive support network for young people in the region.

Looking Forward: Regional Vision

The Youth Park redevelopment aligns with broader regional initiatives like the 2022 Local Housing Action Plan and recent social housing projects. Yet, with ongoing challenges in affordability, climate resilience, and youth safety, the project highlights the need for sustained national support to amplify local action.

This investment represents South Burnett’s pledge to its youth and demonstrates how federal-local partnerships can create meaningful change in regional communities.
