Article Guidelines

Effective Date: 01-01-2025
South Burnett Advocate welcomes article and content submissions from community members, guest writers, photographers, and other contributors.

Please read these guidelines carefully before submitting your work.

1. What We Publish

  • Local news, community stories, events, and features relevant to the South Burnett region
  • Opinion pieces, interviews, reviews, and informative articles
  • Original photographs and artwork
  • Content that is respectful, accurate, and suitable for a general audience

2. Submission Format & Requirements

  • Word count: Articles should be between 500 and 1,500 words.
  • File format: Please submit your article as a Microsoft Word document (.docx). You may use any word processing application that can save or export to .docx format (e.g., Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice, Apple Pages).
  • Images: You may include up to two images (maximum file size 1MB each). Accepted file types are .jpg and .png. Images can be embedded in your Word document or, preferably, uploaded separately through our submission form.
  • Image selection: We will select and optimise the best image for use in your article on our blog. Not all submitted images may be published.
  • Name and bio: You may choose to have your article published under your real name, a pen name (pseudonym), or anonymously. Please indicate your preference. You may also include a short author bio (1–3 sentences, optional).
  • Submission method: All articles must be submitted through our online form. Please ensure your contact details are included (these will not be published without your consent).

3. Copyright & Permissions

  • By submitting, you confirm you are the original creator or have permission to submit the content.
  • All submissions must be your own original work and must not infringe the rights of others (no plagiarism).
  • By submitting images, you confirm you have the right to use and share them. Please provide photographer credit if applicable.
  • You retain copyright in your own work.
  • You grant South Burnett Advocate a non-exclusive, royalty-free, perpetual license to use, display, edit, and distribute your submission on our website and related platforms.
  • If you wish to have your work removed or amended after publication, please contact us.
  • We may edit submissions for clarity, length, or style, but will not make substantive changes without your consent.

4. Editorial Process

  • All submissions are reviewed by our editorial team.
  • We may contact you for clarification or additional information.
  • Publication is at our discretion; not all submissions will be published.
  • We reserve the right to edit, decline, or remove submissions at our discretion for any reason, including legal or editorial considerations.
  • We aim to review submissions within two weeks. If your article is selected for publication, we will notify you by email.

5. Contributor Acknowledgement

  • Your name (real, pen name, or anonymous) will be published with your article as you specify.
  • If you provide a short author bio, it may be published with your article.
  • We may share your article on social media and with partner organisations, always with appropriate credit.

6. Media Agencies & Third Parties

Media agencies or third parties wishing to use articles or images published on our website must contact us for permission. We may grant licenses for use on a case-by-case basis and may negotiate a fee where appropriate.

7. Code of Conduct

  • No defamatory, offensive, or unlawful content will be accepted.
  • Respect the privacy and dignity of individuals and the community.
  • Please disclose any conflicts of interest or relevant affiliations in your submission.

8. Privacy & Data Handling

  • Personal information provided with your submission will be handled in accordance with our Privacy Policy & Disclaimer.
  • If you require an accessible format, please let us know in your submission.

9. Remuneration

  • We do not offer payment for unsolicited submissions. Commissioned work will be negotiated separately if applicable.
